Gardening Terminology

I   Garden Design v. Landscape Design

As used on this blog, Garden Design will refer to all arrangements, layouts and selection of living materials.  Topics might cover anything from mixed borders, to borrowed scenery, to including raised beds in a garden layout. Landscape Design, although it incorporates the arrangement of living materials, also encompasses hardscapes, such as walkways, walls, patios, and driveways. Gardening in the Mud won’t address landscape design issues, other than occasional discussions on using plants to integrate structures into the garden design.

II   Scientific Names of Plants

As a trained horticulturist, I’ve learned to refer to plants by their scientific names rather than by their common names. Using the scientific name is a useful habit to develop if you want to make sure that you’re purchasing the correct plant, or even if you just want to research a plant on the internet. So my posts will usually use the scientific name first, with the common name referred to parenthetically.
