Plant of the Month: Anemone x hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’

Anemone x hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’

Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ is unquestionably my favorite perennial:  large, maple-shaped leaves, delicate white flowers in abundance, and great garden presence. I love all Japanese anemones, but, unfortunately, other than Anemone ‘Whirlwind’ and Anemone vitifolia ‘Robustissima’ (the grape-leaved anemone), ‘Honorine Jobert’ is the only reliably hardy variety for Zones 5 and 6.

Anemones need protection from strong winter winds and full sun (unless sited in a northern exposure). They require excellent drainage, plenty of moisture and room to ramble, since they will colonize over time. ‘Honorine Jobert’ has no real insect or disease problems, even in the most hot or humid weather. Try to find a place in your garden to enjoy its late summer-early fall bloom.
